please teach your daughter
everything you know
about hockey and baseball,
about how the boys will
pull her hair and poke her
in the eye, and that though
this is because they like her,
she can still throw them a
punch or two.

please teach your daughter
everything you know about
punching.

then, please,
bring my father
news of the world.
he may be going, but he's
not yet gone.

once you have done these things,
marry a singer-songwriter-type
and forget about me.

postscript:
and please
water my cactus
every month
on the month.

don’t forget
to tell it how good
it’s looking;
it has self-esteem issues.

Edit 2: April 24th: Won first place in John Abbott College's Creative Writing contest.

we had 24 hours to revise, and so this is what i've got. i saved the "process" i went through for fun, but i'll just post the original here:

please don't pull
the dog's tail
and please
water my cactus
every month
on the month
and don't forget
to tell it how
good its looking,
it has self-esteem issues.

please teach your daughter
everything you know about
hockey and baseball,
about how the boys will
pull her hair and poke her
in the eye, and that even if
this is a weird sign of affection
that she can still throw them a
punch or two.
please teach your daughter
everything you know about
punching.

please bring my father
news of the world
every once in a while.
he may be going, but he's
not gone.

once you have done these things,
please marry a rockstar
and forget about me.
